Male develops a light blue sheen on the face, body and in the fins. Both sexes share similar markings with a dark vertical black band below the eye and another behind the gill plate on the body. Some additional bars may occasionally seen in the body. Females lack the overall even blue coloration as in males but may show subtle blue in places.
Located at Likoma Island and between Hai Reef and Makanjila Point. Found in the intermediate to sandy habitat. Diet in the wild consists of invertebrates and algae taken from the sand.
The aquarium should have some rockwork but still provide open swimming space both along the bottom and mid-tank region. Forming caves in the aquarium will greatly benefit this species and bring out its natural behavior. Feed a quality cichlid flake/pellet food, supplement occasionally with frozen brine, krill or mysis.
